How to Look and Feel Your Best for Your Session | Melbourne Family Photographer
When you book a session with me, you’re putting your trust in me to not only capture your memories in a beautiful way, but also to make you look your best. I know how to capture the moments, use the light, work the angles and guide you while shooting to do all of this, but there are a few things you can do in advance so you show up on the day not only looking, but also feeling your best.
I send my clients a comprehensive session guide beforehand including a detailed What to Wear section and I'm also available to them to answer any questions or help with outfits, but here are 3 quick tips that every client should know:
1. Plan your Outfits in Advance
Don't wait until the night before your session to decide what to wear! You should already have what you need in your closet (you definitely don't need to go shopping unless you want to), but just in case little Timmy has outgrown the shirt you were planning for him or an unknown stain is now on your dress, it's better to plan in advance.
Pick a Color Palette: Select a color scheme that complements everyone’s skin tone and fits the season. Neutral tones with a pop of color work well, or you can choose a few complementary colors.
Avoid Matching: While coordinating, avoid dressing everyone in the same color or style. Instead, mix and match within your chosen color palette.
Comfort is Key: Make sure everyone’s outfits are comfortable and allow for movement, especially for kids who will want to run and play during the session. Everyone should be comfortable both standing and sitting (i.e. avoid really short dresses).
2. Stick to Familiar Hair and Makeup Styles
The day of your photography session is not the time to experiment with new hairstyles or makeup looks.
Avoid Unwanted Surprises: Trying a new hair or makeup style can sometimes lead to unexpected results. It’s best to stick with styles you know and love.
Feel Comfortable: Familiar styles will make you feel more confident and at ease in front of the camera.
Neutral Makeup: For those who wear makeup, unless your style is very bold, opt for a neutral look that enhances your features without looking overly done. The goal is to look like the best version of yourself.
Plan Ahead: Schedule any haircuts or styling appointments at least a week before the session to allow time for adjustments if needed.
3. Get Plenty of Rest and Hydrate
A well-rested and hydrated family will look fresh and vibrant in photos.
Prioritize Sleep: Ensure everyone gets a good night’s sleep before the session. Tired faces and cranky moods can show up in photos, so prioritise rest.
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your session. Avoid too much alcohol the night before and too much caffeine on the day. Hydrated skin looks more radiant and healthy.
Healthy Snacks: Have healthy snacks available to keep everyone’s energy up, especially for longer sessions and for kids who are always hungry.
On the day of the session, it's time for you to relax and enjoy the moment...and time for me to get to work!
